  • GED preparation

  • English as a Second Language (ESL) for students who demonstrate limited English proficiency

Students can schedule their time to fit their needs as determined by the student, their instructor, and the Learning Center staff.

Some courses are also offered in the evening. Check the Quarterly Schedule for the specific information or call the Learning Center.

Program Description  (back to top)
The mission of Basic Academic Skills is to reduce barriers to learning, prepare students for success in occupational training programs, and enable students to achieve lifelong learning skills in a nurturing, supportive adult learning/teaching environment.

The focus areas in this department are:

  • Learning Center

  • ESL Refugee

  • Learning assistance for degree and certificate program students
Instruction in basic reading, writing, math, study skills, GED preparation, and English as a Second Language is offered. Skills needed for success in today's workforce are integrated throughout the program. Students work at their own pace to achieve competency in basic academic skills and occupational and life skills applications.

Methods of instruction include tutoring by instructor and peers, small and large group instruction, and computer and video-aided instruction.

Students who wish to improve their basic skills for job advancement, technical courses, or GED testing are welcome. To be successful in the program, students should possess a positive attitude and the ability to work independently and in small groups.
